  17. <p>Sandy Weill's megadeal with American Express augurs a brokerage
  18. war

  20. <p>     Who says you can never go home again? Ever since Sanford
  21. Weill sold Shearson Loeb Rhoades, the brokerage firm that he
  22. created, to American Express in 1981, he has longed to regain
  23. control of the company. After several failed attempts, Weill
  24. finally hit pay dirt when Primerica Corp., where he serves as
  25. chairman, acquired financially ailing Shearson Lehman Bros. in a
  26. $1.2 billion deal that ranks as the largest in the history of the
  27. securities business.

  29. <p>     By combining Shearson with Primerica's Smith Barney, the
  30. acquisition will create a Wall Street powerhouse that poses a
  31. serious threat to industry leader Merrill Lynch. The deal will
  32. also reunite Weill with a company he patched together out of a
  33. string of troubled brokerages during the 1960s and '70s.
  34. American Express had been seeking to unload the money-losing
  35. brokerage. Wall Street hailed the merger as good for all three
  36. firms.
